Uwe Sturm

Uwe was one of the most successful German BMX riders of the 80s and 90s, achieving several German championship titles as well as many good placings in international competitions. He was a role model for an entire generation and dominated his competitors for almost a decade. As a rule, he not only won the finals, but almost every single heat from the heats to the intermediate heats to the final. Uwe was very difficult to beat, especially as his very good starts meant that he usually achieved start-to-finish victories.

Uwe began his BMX career in 1982 at RKV Speyer and later at RV Dudenhofen, where he remained until the end of his active career. In 1982 and 1983, Uwe took part in the German Championships, but was not yet able to place among the finalists. In 1984, he won his first DM title in Weiterstadt, which he repeated in 1985 and 1986 as a licenced rider in the expert class. In 1987, he switched to the super class and also became German champion here in 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990. In addition to the 20-inch class, he was also successful in the cruiser class and also won the DM title here in 1988. He also regularly took first place in the Herbstpokal in the 1980s, where the small starting numbers for the following year were up for grabs.

In addition to his national successes, Uwe was also able to prove his speed internationally. His first major successes were the victories at the IFMA in Cologne and in Paris Bercy. His best year was probably 1985, when he was runner-up in the European Championships in Barcelona/Spain and runner-up in the World Championships in Whistler/Canada. In 1987, he stood on the podium again at the FIAC World Championships in France, finishing third.

Uwe rode from 1983 to 1984 in the expert class for Team GT Germany, then for Team GT Europe, from 1987 to 1988 as a superclass rider for Redline Team Germany, in 1989 for Team Brackens and from 1989 for Team MCS Europe. Here, too, Uwe celebrated a number of national and international successes until he ended his BMX career in 1991 for professional and health reasons.

After his active BMX career, Uwe focussed on his job and family. Since 1989, he and his sister have been running the family business C&U Sturm GmbH Maler und Stuckateure in Harthausen, which was founded in 1943. He also coaches his son Linus Sturm (born 2011) at road bike, cyclocross and track races almost every weekend.

As the undisputed most successful rider of his time and one of the most successful racers that BMX Germany has ever produced, Uwe Sturm was inducted into the German BMX Hall Of Fame in 2025. The honour is all ours.
